I bought Oblivion GotY edition for PC in anticipation of an awesome experience. I would not have bought Oblivion if I had known this before hand, regardless of how great it was. Upon attempting to install Oblivion, I found that it did not support Vista or a 64-bit OS. I set the setup file to run in compatibility mode for XP, and it installed without further issue.
The main storyline ended right there - very short, and very disappointing. Paying to have ridiculous software installed on my computer is not ideal.I ended up being able to play the game just fine, having decided that I may as well play it now that I've bought it, and began to work my way through the quests. I figured it couldn't possibly end so soon, that there must be a turning point coming up, and continued onward. I rate the "fun" at 3 stars for the very open sandbox part of the game, which is continuable after the storyline has been completed. I was wrong. I had played a little of the beginning of it on Xbox 360, and heard from a friend or two that it was a great game.
Very soon, however, it felt like the main story line was coming to a close. Overall, I wish I could get my money back on this one. No matter, I couldn't really blame Bethesda for not liking Vista, and the fix was simple. During the installation I was quite disappointed to find it had SecuROM DRM.
The graphics, gameplay, stories, choices, and sheer size of it total a truly immersive experience. ES4 Oblivion is the best solitary experience in gaming. I'm a MMO fan and when I want to play alone, Oblivion more than fits the bill.
There are literally millions of mods out there that provide anything from extra equipment to new and awesome quests. It includes the Shivering Isles expansion and I havent had the time to even start the quest to go there but I hear it gives you huge amounts of extra content. The best part of the game is that is for the PC which gives it one huge advantage over other platforms, mods. This is definetely the best RPG ever written, maybe the only one that can compete with this one is Morrowind which is from the same line and publisher. I suggest you check out tesnexus.com and also download the Oblivion Mod Manager to keep everything nice and organized.Overall the game runs great on Vista x64 other than a quirk each time you quit the game where it tells you the game it's not responding but it hasn't damage my system or any saved games.I really recommend this game if you enjoy RPGs and long exploring games with awesome stories everywhere. Well written main quest and huge amounts of side quests to suit any type of playing style. This game has so much content that there's no way to finish the game quickly and have a life at the same time. Now this version includes the Knights of the Nine expansion which is really a small quest suited only for "good" players but entertaining nevertheless.
subtract the annoyance of monthly subscriptions and pubescent online twitter and you begin to approach the glory of Oblivion.btw it actually has a compelling storyline that keeps you looking forward to every new development as it unfolds. 2006 game of the year for a very good list of reasons- namely that it's Uber interactive, has TONS of content, and has more variations than any one player could ever possibly explore. ^_^ oh and you get to ride a unicorn. plus much much more. Think Runescape, Guild Wars, Everquest, and World of Warcraft all rolled into one graphically stunning package.
This game crashes on a regular basis and once in a while it will corrupt your save. This game is a blast to play. With all the 3rd party mods and add-ons you could play this for ever. Don't let that scare you off though. It will suck you in and keep you playing for hours on end. However, you need to save regularly on both quick save and full save.
